Satyanarayan Katha: Samagri List, Vidhi & Prasad

Satyanarayan Katha is one of the most loved home poojas in Lucknow. Families hold it on Purnima, after a griha pravesh, around a wedding, on a new job, or simply to say thank you when a wish comes true. It is a pooja of Lord Vishnu in his Satyanarayan form, and its heart is the katha itself: a set of stories about keeping one's word and honouring prasad. It needs no grand arrangements. A clean corner, a chowki, the right samagri and a pandit who reads the katha with feeling are enough. This guide gives you a samagri list you can tick off, the usual order of the vidhi, and the small practical things that make the evening go smoothly for the family and guests.

What the katha is, and when families hold it

The Satyanarayan Vrat Katha is traditionally linked to the Skanda Purana and is read in five chapters, or adhyay. The stories — a poor Brahmin, a woodcutter, a merchant and his family, a king who ignored the prasad offered by cowherds — all come back to one idea: a promise made to God should be kept, and prasad should never be treated lightly. That is why families sit through the whole reading and take prasad before anyone leaves.

Purnima is the most common day, and many households in Lucknow keep a monthly or yearly katha on the full moon. It is also held on Ekadashi or Sankranti, at a griha pravesh, after a wedding when the bride first comes home, on birthdays and anniversaries, and whenever a mannat is fulfilled. The exact date and time are fixed by your family pandit, or by the pandit who will perform the katha if you do not have one. An evening katha is the usual North Indian custom, but a morning one is perfectly fine if that suits the day.

Satyanarayan Katha samagri list

Lists vary a little between families and pandits, so share this one with yours and let them add or strike out items. Buying everything a day early saves the last-minute dash to the market.

  • Chowki (wooden platform) with a red or yellow cloth
  • Picture or idol of Lord Satyanarayan; some families also keep a Shaligram
  • An idol of Ganesh ji, or a supari to represent him
  • Kalash of copper or brass with water, a little Gangajal, mango leaves and a coconut wrapped in red cloth
  • Banana leaves or small banana stems to form a mandap around the chowki
  • Roli, haldi, chandan, akshat (unbroken rice) and moli or kalawa
  • Janeu, supari, paan leaves, laung, elaichi and a few coins
  • Tulsi leaves — essential, since an offering to Vishnu is not complete without them
  • Fresh flowers, a garland for the deity and loose petals
  • Panchamrit: milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar or mishri
  • Bananas and seasonal fruits, panchmeva (mixed dry fruits) and a sweet
  • Ingredients for prasad: wheat flour or suji, ghee, sugar and dry fruits
  • Diya, cotton wicks, ghee, dhoop, agarbatti and kapoor for the aarti
  • Aarti thali, bell, a lota of water, and an aasan for the pandit and for the couple doing the pooja
  • Havan kund, wood, havan samagri and ghee if a havan is included

The vidhi, step by step

The order below is the common North Indian pattern. Your pandit may shorten or expand it depending on the occasion and your family's custom, and regional variations are entirely normal.

  • Purification and sankalp: the yajman (the person or couple doing the pooja) sit facing the deity and state their name, gotra and the purpose of the pooja
  • Ganesh pooja, so that the pooja goes ahead without obstacles
  • Kalash sthapana and, in many families, Navgraha pooja
  • Pooja of Lord Satyanarayan with water, panchamrit, chandan, flowers, tulsi, fruits and naivedya
  • The katha — all five chapters read aloud while the family listens with folded hands
  • Havan, if the family has chosen one
  • Aarti, usually 'Om Jai Lakshmi Ramana', with everyone standing
  • Prasad and panchamrit shared with everyone present

Prasad: panjiri, suji halwa and panchamrit

Prasad is the part guests remember. In Lucknow and across Uttar Pradesh the classic offering is panjiri — wheat flour roasted in ghee with sugar and dry fruits — or a suji halwa, often with sliced banana folded in. Some families make both. Whatever you choose is offered to the deity first, with tulsi, and only then shared.

Make the prasad in a clean kitchen before the pooja begins, keep it covered near the chowki, and plan quantities so that every guest gets some — including the neighbours who drop in just for the aarti. Panchamrit is best prepared fresh, shortly before the pooja. If you would rather not cook on the day, prasad and a simple satvik meal can be arranged as part of the booking.

Setting up at home: space, smoke and seating

Most kathas in Lucknow happen at home — a bungalow drawing room in Mahanagar or Aliganj, the terrace of a family house in Indira Nagar, or the living room of a flat in one of the newer towers in Gomti Nagar Extension. Ask your pandit which direction the chowki should face, leave room for the pandit and the yajman to sit comfortably, and lay durries or chairs in front for guests.

In flats, think about the havan before the day. Smoke can set off alarms and drift into corridors, so open the windows, switch off any fan blowing towards the havan kund, and let your society office know if the havan will be a large one. Keep a bucket of water within reach. Elderly guests will be grateful for a few chairs at the back, and a marked place for shoes at the door stops a pile-up in the passage.

Fasting, dress and small courtesies

Many families fast until the katha ends and break the fast with prasad; others simply eat satvik food that day. It is a personal choice, not a condition. Light-coloured traditional clothes are common, and the yajman usually wear something new or freshly washed.

Keep phones on silent during the reading, and try not to get up in the middle of a chapter — the katha itself explains why attention and respect for prasad matter. Offer the pandit dakshina, clothes or a fruit basket as your family tradition goes.

FAQQuestions people ask

Can Satyanarayan Katha be done on any day?

Purnima is the most popular day, but the katha is also held on other auspicious days and on family occasions such as a griha pravesh, a wedding or an anniversary. Your pandit will suggest a suitable date and time.

Is a havan necessary with Satyanarayan Katha?

No. Many families do the katha without a havan. Some add one, especially at a griha pravesh or when the pandit advises it. Mention your preference when you ask for a quote so the samagri and timing are planned accordingly.

Which prasad is offered in Satyanarayan Katha?

In Uttar Pradesh it is usually panjiri or suji halwa with banana, along with panchamrit and fruits, always offered with tulsi. Family customs differ, so follow what your elders or pandit suggest.

How long does the katha take?

Usually a couple of hours including the pooja, the five chapters, aarti and prasad, and longer if a havan follows. Ask the pandit for a rough timing so you can tell guests when to arrive.
